Professor Khemchand N. Moorani is currently working as a full-time Professor of Paediatrics and Pediatric Nephrology at The Kidney Centre Postgraduate Training Institute, Karachi (TKC PGTI) since 2020, following his retirement from the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), Karachi. 

He had been affiliated with The Kidney Centre as an Honorary Consultant Pediatric Nephrologist from 2005 to March 2011 and then from April 2011 to 2020 he worked as a part-time Consultant Paediatrician and Paediatric Nephrologist at The Kidney.

He graduated from Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), Jamshoro, Hyderabad, Sindh in 1988 and was awarded the Bachelor’s degree by former Prime Minister Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto for being amongst the first eight positions of 1988 convocation of LUMHS.

He did his internship in paediatric medicine and paediatric surgery at NICH, Karachi, from August 1988-1989. Joined the MCPS training at NICH and successfully qualified in 1991. After MCPS, he worked as a consultant paediatrician at the district headquarters hospital Mithi, Tharparkar, for one year in Sindh government. Subsequently, he joined NICH after federal public service commission in 1993, where he completed FCPS training & acquired his fellowship from CPSP in 2001. During his FCPS training, he went to Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation for a three-month training in Hemodialysis in 1998 to initiate a Pediatric Hemodialysis unit at NICH.

After his FCPS, he was awarded an International Pediatric Nephrology Association (IPNA) fellowship to join Children Medical Institute, Shaw-Kidney Center, National University Hospital, Singapore as IPNA fellow for 6 months under the mentorship of Professor Hue Yap Kim, the Secretary of Asian Pediatric Nephrology Association. On completion of IPNA Paediatric Nephrology Fellowship, he joined NICH as Assistant Professor, Pediatric Medicine in 2005.

In 2008, after the retirement of Professor Afroze Ramzan, former director, NICH and first Pediatric Nephrologist of Pakistan, Professor Khemchand became the Head of Pediatric Nephrology and Dialysis unit. Since then, he remained the head of the department until his retirement in 2020. During this period, he was promoted as Associate Professor in 2010 and Professor of Pediatric Medicine under Jinnah Sindh Medical University, Karachi, in 2016. Subsequently, he was posted as Professor of Paediatric Nephrology on the creation of a new seat of Professor in the department of Nephrology & Dialysis of NICH.

Professor Khemchand is a recognized supervisor of the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan (CPSP) for MCPS & FCPS in Pediatric Medicine, since 2006. He is an examiner for MCPS & FCPS general pediatric medicine examinations conducted by CPSP, too. During his tenure in Nephrology, he received recognition as a Supervisor of Pediatric Nephrology and the department for Pediatric Nephrology Training by College of Physicians and Surgeon of Pakistan (CPSP). During his tenure, three fellows completed nephrology training under his supervision.

He is currently an approved supervisor and examiner of Paediatric Nephrology at The Kidney Centre by CPSP since 2024 after the accreditation of Department of Pediatric Nephrology at TKC.

He also served as a Member of the Paediatric Faculty at CPSP from 2020-2024. He is active in the Paediatric Nephrology Group of PPA in developing guidelines, updating the Pediatric Nephrology Syllabus, updating the Best Choice Questions (BCQ) bank and examination pattern. Recently, with his efforts, the theory assessment examination has been changed from an Essay to both papers of BCQ type.

His major areas of interest in pediatric nephrology are nephrotic syndrome, urinary stone disease, acute kidney injury and chronic kidney disease. Current interest has been in genetic aspects of different kidney problems, particularly Steroid Resistant Nephrotic Syndrome (SRNS), recurrent stone disease, Hyperoxaluria, Tubular disorders (RTA & Bartter syndrome).

He is an interventional Nephrologist and has vast experience in percutaneous renal biopsy and vascular access, including internal jugular, subclavian and femoral catheter insertion. He has a lot of experience in managing acute peritoneal dialysis (PD), PD catheter insertion and has used night cycler for automated PD patients.  He has been involved in managing patients on continuous automated peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) in children. Professor Khemchand N Moorani has participated in a number of conferences, seminars, workshops and presented papers, delivered lectures. He is member of a number of professional societies affiliated with pediatrics and Nephrology including the Pakistan Pediatric Association (PPA), Pakistan Society of Nephrology, IPNA, ASPNA and International Society of Nephrology. He has published a significant number of scientific papers in recognized local periodicals as well as in international journals. He is very much interested in the development of Pediatric Nephrology in Pakistan. His future aims are the development of CAPD at The Kidney Center since small kids of less than 2 years are dying due to kidney failure since the appropriate age-matched disposables are not available in Pakistan for Hemodialysis. Though this objective achievement is challenging but with the help of his team member Dr. Saima Kashif, Assistant Professor and Pediatric Nephrologist at TKC and with the everlasting cooperation of TKC’s administration (Dr. Syed Saeed Hassan Chishty-Administrator & Paediatrician and Professor Rashid Jooma-CEO) and the Board of Governors, it may become a successful dream.
